hen Ed Husser said he would be making a trip to South Dakota in August and that Kennebec would be his first stop, though I knew him as a man of his few but firm words, I doubted it would be possible. But, in a sadly failing condition, his adoring wife, Linda, gave him a hand stepping out of the new travel trailer in house slippers. We sat in the shade of the KOA park on a sunny August Sunday and talked of dogs, people and places, and decided to drive to the Madsen Ranch and show Linda where the puppy she saved won so impressively. She opened the first pasture gate and we got near the base of the north ridge. "We'd better go back." The strong man had been oh, so weakened by cancer. Back in town he ate pasta and sauce in our house at King's, but was too worn to talk. The note found next morning: "Mr. John and Don, thank you for your kindness and friendship.
